Springfield Mile May 2011

Cody Johncox Professional Debut - 2010

January 1, 2012
happy holidays
I hope everyone had a happy holiday.  Mine was good.  I've been waiting to ride on the ice but the New York weather is not cooperating.  I have been traveling to DeQuoin to the indoor short track to do some off season training and bike set up.  I am ready and waiting for Daytona in March.  My dad and I are traveling down to do some racing.  They say it is supposed to get cold this week I am hoping that we get some ice to ride on.

Knoxville, Iowa and Brainerd, MN

The past few weekends have been busy and I have been doing a lot of traveling with Dustin Say and James Rispoli.  First we went to Knowville, Iowa and it looked like a fast track.  In practice I was spinning coming out of the turns.  I dropped the pressure but then I started to hop out of the turns.  I tried a gearing change.  In the last qualifying session I kept coming into the turns to hard which pushed me up to the slippery top. The harder I tried the higher up the track I went.  I made the show but barely.  I qualified 30th.  I made some major changes and went out for my heat.  I had to start from the third row and I got a horrible start and the harder I tried to move forward the worse I ran.  About half way through I finally relaxed and started to move forward but not enough to get into the main I had to go to the semi with another third row start.  In the semi I got a good start but got pinched off and almost fell.  I pushed on real hard and worked my way up to 6th.  I neede to be in the top 4, I finally got the track figured out but ran out of laps, I finished fifth and didn't make the main.

The next race we went to was in Brainerd, MN. . a third mile track.  Practice went great and I qualified 17th not as good as I wanted, I got held up in the last qualifing.  I pulled the first heat, it was cold there and I had my tire warmers on.  After opening ceremonies we got to test the track but it was very slick and they decided to do some more track prep.  When we finally got going I got a great start and was going good when we had a restart.  I didn't get as good of a restart this time but manage to work my was up to forth and in the main when i got a flat tire and couldn't finish.  Now I had to go to the semi and start from dead last on the third row.  I had a great running bike this week except for the tire, I just hoped I could get to forth to get to the main.  In the semi I got an awesome start and worked my way forward every lap.  I finally got to 5th when I got the white flag.  I one lap and had to move up oned position and about an 8 bike lead.  When I  went across the checker I was at his footpeg.  I finished 5th again and not good enough.

I will not be at Calistoga, but I will be at Pomono for the last race of the year.

Springfield Race Report

Labor Day weekend was the second Springfield Mile for the year.  My parents and I made the long trip.  Day 1 was the short track and it was a small track.  I qualified for the first time, but I still struggled.  It was a slam fest in the tight little track.  I didn't transfer from my heat so I had to go to the semi.  The semi was filled with restart after restart and the bikes were getting hot. I was working my way up to the front when I got taken out and had to start on the back row and with all the restarts it was full.  By the restart my clutch was hot and I got a bad start.  I worked my way up to six but it wasn't good enough to get into the main.

Day2 was the Mile and I was ready.  First practice went great, the track was the fastest it has ever been and I was in 5th place.  I left the bike alone and I ended up 14th.  I made some changes and went out for my last qualifying session.  I ended up qualifying 11th finally I was in the front row.  Th eheat didn't go as well, my start was bad and I got brake checked in the last lap putting me in 8th, so again I had to go to the semi.  In the semi I got a better start I was out front most of the race with a battle with Michael Toon.  I won the semi and made the main , but this would give me a third row start.  I got another decent start in the main and was trying to work the outside.  I was in the back for the first few laps then i started working my way to the front.  The pack of 18 never broke into smaller groups and it was a little scary going four to five wide.  You had to be extra careful not to get sucked into the draft at the wrong time to prevent an accident.  By the end of the race I was in third and by the last lap I was leading down the back straight.  I wanted to get passed so that I could draft to the checkered.  But that didn't workbecause Cory Crawford crashed in turn three on the last lap.  I finished 6th and was lucky I didn't get collected in the crash where three other riders went down.

Medina TT final race
Last weekend was the final race of the season.  It was a battle for the 250 Expert Class between Brad Hazel and myself the winner of this race would determine who would win the class. Everyone says it was the best race of the day Cole got out front right away and took the lead but the race was for 2nd and the points leader.  Brad and I passed each other several times in each lap.  In the end I got by Brad and pulled away.  Great race Brad!!!  In the Open Expert race I finished 3rd and 5th overall for the year.

I 96 then off to California

Last weekend I went to I 96.  I struggled there all day.  I qualified poorly, 30th which put me in the back row.  My heat wasn't much better, I finished 14th so I had to go to the semi.  I finally figured the track out but it was to late.   I finished 6th not good enough to get me to the main event.

I am in the top 10 in points so next I go to California to race Lodi on Fri and Sacramento Mile on Saturday.  It should be a good trip.

Lima Ohio

Last weekend my family and I went to Lima, Ohio Half Mile.  I was excitted, I did well on test day.  I was in 11th after practice, but qualifying didn't go as well.  The track got a lot slower and rougher and I struggled.  I ended up qualifying 23rd.  I was diappointed because this is my favorite kind of track.  In my heat I stalled my bike on the line, but I got lucky they gave a complete restart.  On the restart I got a great start but as the race went on I could feel my rear shock getting spongey and could run the fast line.  I finished 6th qualifying me for the main event.  After talking with Steve Beatty of 26 Suspension we made some changes.  In the final I got a decent start and ran the high line and started going forward.  I got up to eighth and battled around 8th and 9th and 10th for a few laps.  I moved around trying different lines trying to find one to get me to the front.  Finally I stuck it under Mikey Martin and drove in real hard to get back 9th place.  I learned a lot about suspension set up which will help for Fredrick MD next weekend.

Next weekend there is a big race at Medina where there should be a lot of Pro riders and the off to Fredrick, MD Allstar Race on the 4th.

Lima test and Hartford, MI

The last few weeks have been busy.  My father and I took a few days and went to Lima, Oh Media Day.  This was a great day to test the bike.  I got to dial in my suspension and gearing for the cushion half mile.  From there we went to Hartford, Mi a grooved half mile.  I haven't run many of these and was very excitted.  Practice went great and I was in 10th.  The tracked slowed down for qualifying and i got slower so I had to make some changes.  I ended up qualifying 14th.  In the heat I got bumped off the line and pused off the groove coming out of the first turn in 10th.  I new I had work to do.  I found a line that worked and got by some riders and finished 7th qualifying me for the main event.  In the main I got a good start but, I made some changes that just didn't work.  I couldn't get the pull to get by anyone.  I finished 12th and I learned a lot.

The next weekend was Medina.  The first Medina I tried something new that just didn't work so I went back to my old set up and did much better.  I also pulled out the old 250F and finished 2 getting me into the Grand Prix.  It was a pretty good day.  The 250 just wasn't enough for the 450s but I felt good and had a lot of fun.

Springfield Mile

Last weekend was the Springfield Mile in Springfield, Ill.  Saturday was the TT but it got rained out.  Sunday was cloudy and the track was very wet.  When the program finally started they decided to run the short program which means no semis.  There was no room for error today.  The track was rough and there were over 52 riders trying to be in the top 32 after the timed practices.  I qualified 16th which put me in the second row. The heat ran great and I finshed 4th.  In the  main I wanted front row but I was still in the second row.  I got a good start and was in 8th going into the first turn.  After a couple of laps the lead group of 5 riders pulled away.  I worked my way throught the group and was on my own trying to catch the lead pack.  After a few more laps I cought the lead pack.  By the white flag I was drafting for third, but in turn 3 I made a mistake and was back to 5th where I finished.  It was my best finish yet and i was vey excited.

Monday was the rain date for the TT.  My bike was running good but I struggled all day.  I picked up over two seconds in the practices but it wasn't enough to qualify.  I was diappointed but it was the first race of the year that I didn't qualify.

June 11th is a new half mile in Michigan and I am ready.

I want thank Ron Jewell at RLJ Engines and Jim at Dynothech for making my bike run great.  I also want to thank Steve Beattie at Twenty Six Suspension for all his help all weekend, And of course my dad for his help.

DuQuoin. Ill Short Track
Raced the indoor short track yesterday but didn't have a lot of luck.  It is a small slam fest short track.  Qualified 31st even though my bike broke in the last qualifying session.  I worked myself from the back row in the heat to take 10th.  Not good enough to go to the main, in the semi the bike worked better but I fell and had to restart from the back.  I finished 10 again still not good enough.  Thanks to Corey Crawford for the use of his bike after mine broke.  Thanks to Jesus Crawford and Maynard Priestly for their help.  See everyone again at Springfield.  Cant go to California I have to go to school!!

Daytona Races

Day 1 Daytona Short Track.  This was an import race for me, my dad who is always there to help me could not come.  I came down with the Crawford family and new they would help as well as the other New York Riders, the Hazel's and Brian Newman.  The day started out wet and the timed practices were not being displayed. We all were waiting after qualifying to see if we qualified.  I qualified 15th and was in the program.  I had talked with Steve Beattie for some advice and adjustments and was ready for the heat.  I had a good holeshot and was running good when I got pushed out and sent to the back.  I had to go to the semi.  The semi was the same a good holesot and up to the transfer spot of 4th then a rder checked up and I almost fell and went backwards, but the bike was hooking up and I made a hard drive towards the front.  I ended up one out of the transfer and was done for the day.  it was bitter sweet.  I was mad because I didn't make the main but excitted because I knew I had the bike set up right and the confidence to do better tomarrow.

Day 2 Daytona Short Track.  I felt good today and was doing a lot of consulting with Steve Beattie.  I didn't qualify as well 20th but I felt good.  The heat race went well.  I got a good holeshot and was up front the whole race.  I finished 5th and was going directly to the main. After watching the track and working with Steve and talking to my dad on the phone I was ready.  The final didn't start out as well as the rest of the racing. I got hit off the start and sent backwards.  With a hard charge I drove my bike under several riders and worked my way up to finish 10th.

I want to thank Steve Beattie and Jesus Crawford  all their help.  I also want to thank all my sponsors with out you I wouldn't be able to race.  My next Pro race will be at DuQuoin Short Track in the begining of April.

Post season practice

Since Labor Day at Springfield I have been doing a lot of riding at some local pratice tracks.   I have been on some different motocross tracks as well as some dirt tracks.  I even found a new place to ride supermoto although I haven't had a chance to get there.  Hopefully I will before the snow falls.  Between school and working at my dad's shop, I have been busy training for next season.  I ride my bike on nice days and jog on days when I can't bicycle and ride on weekends and some Wednesdays.
